Narrative:
I was flying and called for 45 degree flaps and the captain selected 45. The flaps started to move; but stopped at around 41 and then started to move up and down 1-2 degrees. We decided to return the flap lever to 30 degrees because that was the last solidly held flap position. At this point we were approximately four miles from the runway and decided to cancel the approach to run the abnormal checklist. After the go around; we finished the checklist and returned for a landing with 30 degrees of flaps.

Title: A CRJ-200 flight crew executed a go around following a flap extension anomaly; ran the appropriate checklists; and landed uneventfully at a lesser flap setting.
