Narrative:
We were descending to 10;000 ft as assigned. Just before leveling we were told of traffic at 2:00 descending and crossing. At that time I think the traffic was about 500 ft above us. The controller told us if we needed to we could climb. Shortly after that we got the monitor vertical speed which showed slowing of descent rate. We slowed the rate and even climbed a couple of 100 ft. The traffic passed in front of us about 400 ft below descending. The controller said another controller was responsible.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: An air carrier pilot reported a near miss with another aircraft on a LGA arrival at 10;000 FT because of a miscommunication between controllers on different frequencies.
