Narrative:
During cruise ATC advised that tower had called and said they found remnants of one of our tires on the runway. We called dispatch to advise them of the situation and to get any info they might have. We were told that a tire and axle were found. We referenced the QRH; declared an emergency; and told ATC our intentions: we were going to go out over the water to lower the gear; do a fly-by of tower to get a visual of the aircraft condition; burn down to min gas to reduce weight; and land. Accomplished all as briefed. Landed uneventfully; stopped straight ahead on runway; and were towed to the gate.
