Narrative:
We got a [landing] gear disagree warning message upon retraction of the landing gear on takeoff from xxl in ZZZ. Nose gear retracted; mains did not lock in 'up' [position]. Captain was flying and called for quick reference handbook (QRH) for gear disagree. We climbed to 3000' feet and asked for vectors. We reviewed the QRH while the aural warning would not cancel; which was very distracting. The QRH was performed and it called for manual extension of the landing gear. The gear came down and 'locked' and the aural warning for the disagree finally stopped. We opted not to declare an emergency as we anticipated a normal landing. We did have the tower roll out the [fire] trucks and emergency personal just in case. We landed as normal on xxl and returned to the gate. Nothing we could have done to prevent this malfunction.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A Captain and First Officer report difficulties communicating with ATC; each other; the Flight Attendant; and passengers on a CRJ-200 due to a very loud; repeating 'Gear Disagree' Aural Warning that would not cancel. Both Main Gears were continuously cycling in the retract mode and would not lock in the 'Up' position. An air-turn-back was performed.
