Narrative:
On final approach to runway 14L at iah. Approximately 1 1/2 mi from T/D the tower advised us that runway 14L was closed, and they asked if we would accept runway 14R. I asked the captain and he agreed to land on runway 14R. I checked the airport layout and saw there was 6030' available and concurred with his decision. The landing was uneventful. During the turnaround cycle I checked the arm's manual only to find out runway 14R is not an authority/authorized runway for our company. I recommend some form of identify of commercial plates to indicate whether a runway is authority/authorized or unauthorized, (possibly an 'X' placed through it on the airport diagram). The arm's manual is extremely bulky and difficult to handle. It definitely should not be opened on final approach, so some means of identing an unauthorized runway quickly is needed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG LANDED ON A RWY UNAUTH FOR HIS COMPANY'S USE.
Narrative: ON FINAL APCH TO RWY 14L AT IAH. APPROX 1 1/2 MI FROM T/D THE TWR ADVISED US THAT RWY 14L WAS CLOSED, AND THEY ASKED IF WE WOULD ACCEPT RWY 14R. I ASKED THE CAPT AND HE AGREED TO LAND ON RWY 14R. I CHKED THE ARPT LAYOUT AND SAW THERE WAS 6030' AVAILABLE AND CONCURRED WITH HIS DECISION. THE LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL. DURING THE TURNAROUND CYCLE I CHKED THE ARM'S MANUAL ONLY TO FIND OUT RWY 14R IS NOT AN AUTH RWY FOR OUR COMPANY. I RECOMMEND SOME FORM OF IDENT OF COMMERCIAL PLATES TO INDICATE WHETHER A RWY IS AUTH OR UNAUTH, (POSSIBLY AN 'X' PLACED THROUGH IT ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM). THE ARM'S MANUAL IS EXTREMELY BULKY AND DIFFICULT TO HANDLE. IT DEFINITELY SHOULD NOT BE OPENED ON FINAL APCH, SO SOME MEANS OF IDENTING AN UNAUTH RWY QUICKLY IS NEEDED.
