Narrative:
[We] encountered severe wake turbulence after being vectored behind a 747 at night in visual conditions. [It] caused 45 degree roll and loss of 300 ft and gain of 500 ft during encounter and recovery. [It is] bad policy for airport to jeopardize the safety of passenger carriers just to force them to follow heavy aircraft at night due to noise. An md-88 makes nowhere near the noise of four engine jets. Not fun trying to recover from a low altitude wake turbulence encounter at night behind a 747. There are plenty of runways available; i.e. 4; in cvg to do this.
