Narrative:
Heard washington center controller telling everyone to 'listen up' because he was working four (4) frequencies. I have heard this statement made by other controllers when flying into iad on previous occasions but thought it was an anomaly. First of all; we have no way of knowing how many frequencies a controller is working or how many airplanes. We can surmise whether he/she is busy or not by the volume of radio calls he/she makes but that's about it. But more importantly; why is one person working four frequencies at once? That seems like an overloaded controller situation to me and compromises the safety of everyone in that sector.
