Narrative:
We landed on runway 24R and crossed 24L at Z. We contacted ground and were instructed to taxi via east; right; D; and hold short of E12. I thought taxiway right was up near taxiway south and went right past right. I knew I was in trouble as I approached E12 and was still on east. I was already stopping the aircraft as ground instructed me to hold my position. [Another carrier's] aircraft was turning onto E12 and created a nose-to-nose situation. Ground queried if [the other carrier] could turn back onto D; but they replied; 'negative.' ground radioed airport operations and asked for them to clear us for a 180-degree turn on east. We waited about five minutes for airport operations to show up. They cleared us and we did the 180 and taxied to the gate. There were a few extenuating circumstances. There was ongoing construction that closed east; from E12 to E10; and the visibility was lower than normal.
