Narrative:
On departure from tvc initially made a right turn on course instead of a left turn on course. I had inadvertently set the CDI 180 degrees off. The wrongly set CDI was a major contributing factor. The trip we were on is called an illegal overnight. The crew stays on duty all night and gest 5 hours sleep. Before our day ended we were on duty 14 hours. Another factor besides fatigue was the first officer's experience and attitude. The first officer had less than 100 hours in aircraft and less than 1300 total flight hours. This first officer and the majority of first officer's at my company think that the only responsibility is to fly every other leg, fill out the log and get the clearance. Most don't have a clue to what CRM is. It's like flying with a bunch of private pilots with 300 hours of total flight time. I think the problem lies with the low total time and also the company's poor relationship with its pilots. Most first officer's attitudes are that they deserve to be captain with 1500-2000 hours of flight time. This idea comes about from the low wages first officer's make--$134 the first week. The only way to make it financially is to become a captain, and until they do they (the majority) don't care. They think they don't get paid enough to care or share the responsibility. They also feel that it will be the captain that will get violated if anything goes wrong. I don't think the company's training is to blame. Yes, it could be better. Right not it is considered, by many, to be among the best in the industry. Note: after last winter of company and first officer's ineptness I joined the training department. I am part of a program that rotates line pilots through the training department to instruct. After 6 months of instructing I'm back on the line. What I plan next to get out of a dangerous situation is to upgrade to a larger plane and hope by the time I get out of training the winter in the great lakes will be gone and I will also be gone to a better company/major.
