Narrative:
At FL350 we were flying in an area of thunderstorms that were briefed to be way below us. Our radar was on; with about 1 degree down tilt. There were several lightning flashes below us; but nothing showing on the radar ahead. Then a couple lightning flashes showed a very dark shape towering ahead of us 30-40 NM. As soon as I touched the radar tilt; the cells appeared on the nd. I immediately requested cpdlc with tokyo a right deviation 20 NM south of track for weather; followed immediately with a request for 30 NM deviation south of track. They did not get back to us in time; so I used my emergency authority to deviate south of track. We checked our TCAS; no one was around; and our lights were on. We deviated about 16 miles right of track; during which we received a cpdlc message from tokyo that we were ok to deviate up to 30 NM right of track for weather. After passing the large cell; we returned to track and had no further issues with the deviation.
