Narrative:
After being handed off to lax approach we were told to follow a widebody transport, descend and slow down. When crossing the smo VOR we were given a heading, a further descent and a speed reduction. We were then given a right turn cleared for a visual approach runway 25L. The distance and altitude from the airport required power to idle with flaps extended. I also elected to use the speed brakes causing a normal warning horn to sound. We were then asked if we had the medium large transport in sight on a short final, after a short time the first officer found the traffic and we were told to follow that traffic. In accomplishing this I turned in front of the widebody transport on final 25R. Before turning I saw the widebody transport a little lower and in hindsight too close. We overshot the runway to give a little room to the widebody transport. After landing local control informed us we were to follow the widebody transport. In conclusion factors affecting this poor judgement were a busy controller, a warning horn sounding all the time, not questioning a clearance and a desire to get the boss there on time.

Title: CLOSE PROX CPR-MDT ACR-WDB ON APCH TO RWYS 25 AT LAX.
Narrative: AFTER BEING HANDED OFF TO LAX APCH WE WERE TOLD TO FOLLOW A WDB, DSND AND SLOW DOWN. WHEN XING THE SMO VOR WE WERE GIVEN A HDG, A FURTHER DSCNT AND A SPD REDUCTION. WE WERE THEN GIVEN A RIGHT TURN CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH RWY 25L. THE DISTANCE AND ALT FROM THE ARPT REQUIRED PWR TO IDLE WITH FLAPS EXTENDED. I ALSO ELECTED TO USE THE SPD BRAKES CAUSING A NORMAL WARNING HORN TO SOUND. WE WERE THEN ASKED IF WE HAD THE MLG IN SIGHT ON A SHORT FINAL, AFTER A SHORT TIME THE F/O FOUND THE TFC AND WE WERE TOLD TO FOLLOW THAT TFC. IN ACCOMPLISHING THIS I TURNED IN FRONT OF THE WDB ON FINAL 25R. BEFORE TURNING I SAW THE WDB A LITTLE LOWER AND IN HINDSIGHT TOO CLOSE. WE OVERSHOT THE RWY TO GIVE A LITTLE ROOM TO THE WDB. AFTER LNDG LCL CTL INFORMED US WE WERE TO FOLLOW THE WDB. IN CONCLUSION FACTORS AFFECTING THIS POOR JUDGEMENT WERE A BUSY CTLR, A WARNING HORN SOUNDING ALL THE TIME, NOT QUESTIONING A CLRNC AND A DESIRE TO GET THE BOSS THERE ON TIME.
