Narrative:
We were getting vectors for the ILS runway 33 at btv. At an altitude of 5;500 ft and a heading of 060 degrees around 17 miles DME from the ILS we had an terrain alert 2 seconds later pull up terrain alert. We initiated the command by the GPWS and climbed to 6;600 ft where the warning ceased. ATC was contacted and informed of the situation and we were told there was no threat of terrain. We continue and executed the ILS approach and landed safely. The weather was IMC and there was no way of knowing how close we were to the terrain so we acted per the commands of the GPWS. We also noticed the MSA on the approach plate to the southeast of the btv VOR was 5;900 ft and we were below that. We are not 100% sure the threat was there; but we do think we were vectored too far out (approximately 18.0 DME for the localizer) and there was a possible danger for the warning to activate.

Title: An LR-40 Captain reported receiving a GPWS terrain warning while being vectored for arrival at BTV. Although ATC stated there was no terrain concern the reporter has some doubts.
