Narrative:
During cruise flight in clouds and rain; I entered an area of moderate turbulence. I only had data link weather. The controller advised of extreme rain ahead for the next 50 miles. I turned to pzd where data link weather showed better conditions. I already had power set for turbulence. Upon turning to pzd I encountered a down draft and went to full power. The plane lost 500 ft before I could safely climb back to 7;000 ft. The controller asked me to say altitude. After I had the situation back under control; I replied that I knew what had happened. That was all that was said by either one of us.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: Aerostar pilot reports encountering heavy rain at 7;000 FT on an IFR flight plan. A turn; with ATC permission; using weather data link information is made to avoid the worst. Turbulence results in a loss of 500 FT with full power set before 7;000 FT can be regained.
