Narrative:
We were on a left downwind for runway 2R and were informed by the tower that an aircraft was on right base for 2L. We didn't see the aircraft and asked tower if we should start our base turn for 2R. Tower replied for us to start the base turn. On short final we noticed on the TCAS that it appeared that we were extremely close to the landing traffic on 2L. The captain told me to go around and a second later we received an RA to climb. We complied with the RA and entered right downwind and landed. We queried the tower about the landing traffic on 2L that gave us an RA; and she replied that she never told us to turn our base leg. The captain replied 'yes you did.' the tower answered back the other aircraft had us in sight. I find that hard to believe because when we received the RA; we were 100 to 200 ft above the other aircraft. Aircraft landing on the left side use left traffic pattern. Aircraft using the right side use right traffic pattern.
