Narrative:

During pushback and just prior to release from tug; ground crew advised of fuel leaking from the #1 engine. Captain inquired if it was a drip or like a garden hose type of leak. 'Garden hose' was the reply. Captain shut down engines #1 and #2 (5 minute estimate for observation already approximately transpired as ground crew commented he was watching leak during the pushback). SOP [was] followed and returned to gate. Two subsequent engine starts were performed to assist mechanics in trouble shooting. Flight was cancelled as a replacement fuel valve part was needed and not available.
