Narrative:
After inbound from FAF on ILS we received an EICAS message slat fail while moving flap lever to 5. Slats were amber with the number 3 displayed. We executed a go around; cleaned up and started QRH procedures for slat/flap fail. Slats would not come out of there number 3 position while flaps would retract. Flap lever was put back in original position according to QRH; slats remained in 3 while flaps went to 5. No unusual flight characteristics were noted during flight and visually no split slats were observed. V+10 was used for approach and landing. Ife was declared and crash fire rescue equipment was called for. Flight landed safely and ife terminated.
