Narrative:

Over charleston, sc, we received a new clearance from ZJX to proceed directly to ormond beach VOR. Checking the map I could see we would stay within the 50 NM offshore requirement for aircraft not approved for overwater flight. When abeam savannah VOR we received clearance to proceed RNAV directly to surfing for the surfn 5 to pbi. We accepted the clearance noting we would be very close to our 50 mi limit. I dialed in ssi VOR and the nearest distance to it we came was 69 mi. We figured our error was due to having to overlay 2 high altitude charts together and drawing the best line we could in turbulence that came up with a legal 50 mi.
