Narrative:
Upon retracting landing gear after takeoff, all gear retracted normally, but left 'door' warning light stayed on. Simultaneously system 'a' hydraulic low pressure lights illuminated. Second officer verified complete loss of 'a' hydraulic fluid and pressure. Advised dtw departure of need to return to field after dumping 15000 pounds fuel to reduce to maximum landing weight (150,000 pounds). Climbed to 6000', dumped fuel, accomplished abnormal checklists, returned and landed without incident at dtw after manual gear crank, maintenance inspection discovered broken line on 'a' hydraulics near left gear assembly.
