Narrative:
Immediately after takeoff an EICAS message appeared: 'lg air/ground fail' and we were unable to move the landing gear [lever] to the up/retract position. We completed several checklists and returned for an uneventful--below max structural landing weight--landing at our departure airport. We taxied back to the gate; notified maintenance and operations and entered appropriate aml write ups.
