Narrative:
After taking off from brown field sdm proceed north for flight to hemet ryan. As my standard procedure began monitoring 120.7 see north tower frequency. Southeast a line of sight heading for lake jennings. This took us to the east of see air traffic area, then north to ramona. When we were approximately abeam of mt helix my son, a student pilot, exclaimed 'dude' and points to 1 O'clock. Just slightly low and in a dive we observe a (yellow and orange, possible small aircraft type aircraft) at approximately 500-600' in front of us. I first pulled back to a climb. The aircraft appeared 400-500' below and 300' to the left as we crossed. I return to a level altitude. After the 'holy cows,' 'gee whiz,' 'how did that happen?', we heard a very garbled transmission on 120.7. See tower responded, 'appears to be white high wing headed north, we're not talking to them.' more garbled xmissions. We were going to interject at this time, but there was more radio traffic. By now a busy tower frequency didn't seem the place to have a discussion about right of way. This is a very busy area and I try to keep heads up flying. It was hazy and the background the other plane was flying out of would be ground clutter with brown mountain background. He did have the right of way and I wish we had seen him sooner and yielded same. The other pilot was on the ball and initiated the evasive action. We would not have collided but it would have been much closer west/O his action. This incident has certainly impressed both my son and i--see and avoid is very important and work on that scan.
