Narrative:
During cruise at FL350 and after passing peck VOR, we were cleared by center to descend to FL290 and upon reaching to slow to 270 KTS. We read back altitude as FL290, set 29000' in the altitude reminder and the second officer set FL290 in the cabin pressure controller. As we were leveling at FL290, the center said we were supposed to be at FL310 and 250 KTS. We disagreed and informed him that our clearance was to FL290 and we had read back 290. He then immediately cleared us to FL290 and said that we may be correct, or something to that effect.
