Narrative:

Company filed flight from huf to ord initial course on V-7, 005 degree, filed for 8000. IFR clearance copied on ground clrd for 9000, and read back. Climb to 9000 under terra haute departure control with no comments from departure control on climb from ground to 9000. When passed off to ZID, they told us that our assigned altitude was 8000. ZID said 9000 was fine and we continued at that altitude. We had transponder with mode C on throughout the flight. Since 9000 is a correct altitude for an easterly course, we did not question that initially assigned altitude was different from filed.
