Narrative:
After takeoff; when 'gear up' was selected; the left main landing gear (medium large transport) indicated an unsafe 'up' position. The appropriate check was executed; which also concluded that the left main gear door was in an unsafe position. We advised ATC; declared an emergency; and contacted flight control for an aircraft return to ZZZZ. The landing was uneventful. After landing; the mechanics found a broken bracket on the [main] gear door; had been the cause of the problem. EFIS; FMS/FMC.
