Narrative:

Fire bell at 70 KIAS on takeoff roll first officer said 'abort abort.' I used maximum reverse and brakes, brought aircraft to stop on runway. I then pulled and discharged bottle 'a'. I turned to see if a fire did actually exist in the left engine. Since I did not observe a fire, I elected not to evacuate the aircraft. I started the auxiliary power unit and went outside the aircraft to check out the left engine. About this time the fire trucks arrived. Since this was a false alarm, we started up the right engine and taxied back to the gate single engine.
