Narrative:

On normal climb out from lga airport, I was given climb clearance from 5000 to 12000 proceed direct to colts week VOR. Approaching 12000' approximately 11000', we were given climb to FL220. Verbatim readback was given 'roger, climb to FL220.' approaching 17000', ny dpe asked our altitude and stated that we interpreted his clearance which was hear 220 degree, expect higher in several miles. He stated no conflicts, told us to maintain 17000' and only was curious of our interpretation of clearance. Readback was given to FL220. I am always conscientious of climb/descent instructions and use exact ATC phraseology. The controller believe it or not remembered our altitude readback.
