Narrative:
I was coming in from the north to mdw VFR. I was given left traffic to runway 4L. Traffic was also using 4R. I turned downwind and was given traffic to follow on final. We found the traffic and continued the approach. Tower said that they warned of traffic on final to runway 4R, but I don't remember hearing that. The surface wind was northeast and I thought it would provide for a normal base and final. As I turned base, I noticed that I was going to overshoot my turn to final. I asked for landing flaps and increased bank angle to 35 degrees which was the maximum I wanted. I overshot to the extended final of 4R, continued the approach and landed on 4L. An air carrier medium large transport was on final to 4R. When I overshot, I got in front of the airliner (by about a 1000' or so). I realized that I misjudged my turn, but as it was occurring noticed that there was no danger in continuing the approach. The airliner would have been jeopardized if he was closer on the final approach. During the maneuver, tower gave me instructions that were not appropriate so I negotiated a continuing approach to a landing. I made a physical judgemental error on a simple VFR pattern. Probably complacency.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: OVERSHOT TURN TO FINAL WITH TRAFFIC ON FINAL FOR PARALLEL RWY.
Narrative: I WAS COMING IN FROM THE N TO MDW VFR. I WAS GIVEN LEFT TFC TO RWY 4L. TFC WAS ALSO USING 4R. I TURNED DOWNWIND AND WAS GIVEN TFC TO FOLLOW ON FINAL. WE FOUND THE TFC AND CONTINUED THE APCH. TWR SAID THAT THEY WARNED OF TFC ON FINAL TO RWY 4R, BUT I DON'T REMEMBER HEARING THAT. THE SURFACE WIND WAS NE AND I THOUGHT IT WOULD PROVIDE FOR A NORMAL BASE AND FINAL. AS I TURNED BASE, I NOTICED THAT I WAS GOING TO OVERSHOOT MY TURN TO FINAL. I ASKED FOR LNDG FLAPS AND INCREASED BANK ANGLE TO 35 DEGS WHICH WAS THE MAX I WANTED. I OVERSHOT TO THE EXTENDED FINAL OF 4R, CONTINUED THE APCH AND LANDED ON 4L. AN ACR MLG WAS ON FINAL TO 4R. WHEN I OVERSHOT, I GOT IN FRONT OF THE AIRLINER (BY ABOUT A 1000' OR SO). I REALIZED THAT I MISJUDGED MY TURN, BUT AS IT WAS OCCURRING NOTICED THAT THERE WAS NO DANGER IN CONTINUING THE APCH. THE AIRLINER WOULD HAVE BEEN JEOPARDIZED IF HE WAS CLOSER ON THE FINAL APCH. DURING THE MANEUVER, TWR GAVE ME INSTRUCTIONS THAT WERE NOT APPROPRIATE SO I NEGOTIATED A CONTINUING APCH TO A LNDG. I MADE A PHYSICAL JUDGEMENTAL ERROR ON A SIMPLE VFR PATTERN. PROBABLY COMPLACENCY.
