Narrative:
We were cleared to 39,000' and later given a frequency change to ZID. We tried several times and went back to previous frequency. We were given another frequency and when we reached ZID they wanted to know if controller had just handed us off because they wanted to stop us at FL370. They said they had to turn an aircraft but it was no problem.
