Narrative:
Cleared for visual approach, controller instructed PIC to slow to minimum airspeed, slower traffic was turning base to final in front of us on runway 9L. ATC instructed PIC to maintain altitude on short final and to await landing clearance. PIC decided to execute go around procedures. Upon initiating go around, the left engine failed. PIC feathered inoperative engine and landed safely without event. Contributing to situation was another aircraft with a communication failure landing on parallel runway. Caution should be exercised when ATC clears for visual approach with other aircraft in vicinity. Vectoring or holding should be utilized rather than multiple aircraft approaching same runway at same time. Supplemental information from acn 379569: upon being cleared for the visual approach, controller told PIC to slow aircraft. Slowed traffic was landing runway 9L from base to final. I was told to maintain altitude approximately 500 ft AGL. I made decision to go around due to slower aircraft. After starting the go around my left engine failed and I feathered the left engine and continued to an uneventful landing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE PLTS ON AN SMT RPT THAT THE PIC WAS MAKING A GAR WHEN THE L ENG FAILED. THE PIC THEN CHANGED HIS MIND AND MADE A SUCCESSFUL STRAIGHT-IN LNDG. ANOTHER ACFT, WITH COM FAILURE, WAS LNDG ON THE PARALLEL RWY.
Narrative: CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH, CTLR INSTRUCTED PIC TO SLOW TO MINIMUM AIRSPD, SLOWER TFC WAS TURNING BASE TO FINAL IN FRONT OF US ON RWY 9L. ATC INSTRUCTED PIC TO MAINTAIN ALT ON SHORT FINAL AND TO AWAIT LNDG CLRNC. PIC DECIDED TO EXECUTE GAR PROCS. UPON INITIATING GAR, THE L ENG FAILED. PIC FEATHERED INOP ENG AND LANDED SAFELY WITHOUT EVENT. CONTRIBUTING TO SIT WAS ANOTHER ACFT WITH A COM FAILURE LNDG ON PARALLEL RWY. CAUTION SHOULD BE EXERCISED WHEN ATC CLRS FOR VISUAL APCH WITH OTHER ACFT IN VICINITY. VECTORING OR HOLDING SHOULD BE UTILIZED RATHER THAN MULTIPLE ACFT APCHING SAME RWY AT SAME TIME. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 379569: UPON BEING CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH, CTLR TOLD PIC TO SLOW ACFT. SLOWED TFC WAS LNDG RWY 9L FROM BASE TO FINAL. I WAS TOLD TO MAINTAIN ALT APPROX 500 FT AGL. I MADE DECISION TO GAR DUE TO SLOWER ACFT. AFTER STARTING THE GAR MY L ENG FAILED AND I FEATHERED THE L ENG AND CONTINUED TO AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG.
