Narrative:
After takeoff red config light illuminated with associated aural alert. Red EICAS message 'config gear not down' was annunciated. I recycled the gear at 4;000 ft to see if that would clear the warning and was unsuccessful. I informed ATC that we wanted to return for landing. We weighed approximately 196;000 pounds. Uneventful landing was made and we taxied to the gate where the aircraft was taken out of service.
