Narrative:

We were cleared on the ruudy departure at teterboro for runway 24. I set the altitude for 2;000 ft but planning to cross wentz at 1;500 ft then climbing to 2;000 ft. After takeoff and on climb I selected the autopilot; I looked at the altitude and distance from wentz and saw that we would be at 1;500 ft well before the intersection; so I reselected the altitude alerter to capture at 1;500 ft. As I was monitoring the autopilot and climb I noticed that we were not capturing the preselected altitude. I disconnected the autopilot; and applied nose down pressure to level however we climbed through and hit 1;700 ft before returning to 1;500 ft. I was fully aware of the altitude restrictions and planning to arrive at the proper altitudes. I was actively monitoring our situation; and took action before we went through 1;500 ft. We were in turbulence and had a high rate of climb even though I had the power pulled back.

Title: LR45 pilot reports exceeding 1;500 FT prior to WENTZ on the RUUDY 4 departure from TEB when the altitude alerter is changed from 2;000 FT to 1;500 with the autopilot engaged. The altitude is quickly corrected back to 1;500 FT from 1;700 FT.
