Narrative:

On climbout passing about FL260 received ECAM for compressor vane engine 2. First officer continued to fly aircraft and handle radios while captain handled ECAM and pulled out QRH. The first officer notified ATC of request to maintain FL290 while coordinating future plans with possible diversion to ZZZ. ECAM and QRH instructed to disconnect autothrottles and minimize throttle movements. Captain called dispatch and maintenance control to discuss problem. Aircraft was still north of ZZZ about 120 NM when event occurred. Captain's discussion with dispatch and maintenance control included previous maintenance plans to change the engine later that night in a maintenance base. Maintenance control also informed crew of only 1 maintenance technician at the destination. Crew discussion was whether to continue to destination or divert to ZZZ. After considering all information crew; elected to divert. First officer notified ATC and aircraft was given clearance direct to a fix for the arrival to ZZZ. A turn was begun direct to the fix and a descent began to FL270. Further clearance was given to FL100 and 250 knots. On descent with thrust lever 2 approach idle; compressor stall occurred and subsequently engine 2 was shut down and ECAM completed. Emergency was declared and approach was continued followed by an uneventful landing. Aircraft exited the runway and stopped while fire trucks and firemen approached aircraft for inspection. Inspection showed some fluid leaking from number 2 engine; with no signs of fire and no excessive temperatures. Aircraft was cleared to taxi to gate.
