Narrative:
Fly west on V6 in an small aircraft not equipped for known ice. Trw's forced a northerly deviation. Around the trw I turned to reno and started to climb from 12,000' to 16,000' to the top of the cumulus buildups. Climbing through 14,000' IMC 1/2' rime ice was picked up but since PIREPS indicated I was over half way through the clouds and I was close to the top, I continued. At 16,000' I was in and out of the tops and ice buildup was very slow. With 1/2-3/4' rime ice at 16,000' the aircraft stalled IMC and lost 4000' altitude. After recovery a VMC hole was found, I continued down below the 12,000' MEA. VMC cancelled IFR and continued to reno. At 14,000' it was 9 degrees, I thought going up. It would be cold enough for the ice to not form, this was not the case and a 180 degree turn to VMC to the north might have worked better.
