Narrative:
Recommend update of jog chart 18-10 edition 2 to reflect large lake just west of reading airport in air traffic area. Mission profile: departed nxx IFR on a razorback flight plan. Proceeded to the latn area and flew a scheduled vr route first officer 48 mins. Exited vr route in the vicinity of ravine TACAN. Proceeded INS direct toward nxx monitoring allentown TACAN for arsa avoidance. I proceeded VFR at 500' AGL to the southeast corner of the latn boundary area. I approached what I interpreted to be lake ontelaunee (utm 2278) using my 1:250,000 scale map. Lake ontelaunee is 5 NM inside the confines of the latn area. Upon crossing the midpoint of the lake I began a slow climb to exit the latn area and recover. During the climb I looked to my 1 O'clock position and spotted an airfield. I maneuvered immediately to my right to avoid the airport traffic pattern. I did not see any other aircraft and did not believe that I had entered the air traffic area. I proceeded southwest and then east clear of the air traffic area to willow grove NAS at 2500' MSL. A VFR pattern entry and landing was accomplished. Post-flight inspection of the current joint operations graphic air chart nk 18-10 edition 2 which I was using for navigation does not depict a large lake directly west of reading airport (utm vv 1271). Due to this map deficiency I apparently misinterpreted my position as being over lake ontelaunee north of the reading air traffic area. Having reasoned that by immediately turning away from my present position I had not entered the air traffic area, I continued VFR to willow grove without attempting contact with the airport tower. I would like to state that I have 3000 deviation free hours of combined military/civilian flight time. Any deviation from far's was completely unintentional and regrettable.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF MLT ON TRAINING FLT MAY HAVE PENETRATED RDG ATA.
Narrative: RECOMMEND UPDATE OF JOG CHART 18-10 EDITION 2 TO REFLECT LARGE LAKE JUST WEST OF READING ARPT IN ATA. MISSION PROFILE: DEPARTED NXX IFR ON A RAZORBACK FLT PLAN. PROCEEDED TO THE LATN AREA AND FLEW A SCHEDULED VR ROUTE FO 48 MINS. EXITED VR ROUTE IN THE VICINITY OF RAVINE TACAN. PROCEEDED INS DIRECT TOWARD NXX MONITORING ALLENTOWN TACAN FOR ARSA AVOIDANCE. I PROCEEDED VFR AT 500' AGL TO THE SE CORNER OF THE LATN BOUNDARY AREA. I APCHED WHAT I INTERPRETED TO BE LAKE ONTELAUNEE (UTM 2278) USING MY 1:250,000 SCALE MAP. LAKE ONTELAUNEE IS 5 NM INSIDE THE CONFINES OF THE LATN AREA. UPON XING THE MIDPOINT OF THE LAKE I BEGAN A SLOW CLIMB TO EXIT THE LATN AREA AND RECOVER. DURING THE CLIMB I LOOKED TO MY 1 O'CLOCK POSITION AND SPOTTED AN AIRFIELD. I MANEUVERED IMMEDIATELY TO MY RIGHT TO AVOID THE ARPT TFC PATTERN. I DID NOT SEE ANY OTHER ACFT AND DID NOT BELIEVE THAT I HAD ENTERED THE ATA. I PROCEEDED SW AND THEN EAST CLEAR OF THE ATA TO WILLOW GROVE NAS AT 2500' MSL. A VFR PATTERN ENTRY AND LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED. POST-FLT INSPECTION OF THE CURRENT JOINT OPERATIONS GRAPHIC AIR CHART NK 18-10 EDITION 2 WHICH I WAS USING FOR NAVIGATION DOES NOT DEPICT A LARGE LAKE DIRECTLY WEST OF READING AIRPORT (UTM VV 1271). DUE TO THIS MAP DEFICIENCY I APPARENTLY MISINTERPRETED MY POSITION AS BEING OVER LAKE ONTELAUNEE NORTH OF THE READING ATA. HAVING REASONED THAT BY IMMEDIATELY TURNING AWAY FROM MY PRESENT POSITION I HAD NOT ENTERED THE ATA, I CONTINUED VFR TO WILLOW GROVE WITHOUT ATTEMPTING CONTACT WITH THE ARPT TWR. I WOULD LIKE TO STATE THAT I HAVE 3000 DEVIATION FREE HOURS OF COMBINED MIL/CIVILIAN FLT TIME. ANY DEVIATION FROM FAR'S WAS COMPLETELY UNINTENTIONAL AND REGRETTABLE.
