Narrative:

After calling for taxi instructions from north terminal, out on end of 'finger', was told to 'taxi to 23L via lima, cross 28.' after pushback, aircraft was heading approximately 150 degree I began to taxi by turning right to approximately north to join lima taxiway. Having just read company NOTAMS, stating takeoff performance on runway 23L was based on full length, not the 23L/28 intersection. I began looking to use full length, i.e., the runway end. I was momentarily confused, after making roughly a 210 degree turn, as to which taxiway would actually place me at the end of 23L. I mistook runway 23R for 23L, and began to strain my eyes to see where the threshold for 23R began, and where taxiway Z ended, still intent on using the full length of the runway. Focusing on runway 23R, and having been told to cross runway 28, I headed out the short taxiway (see diagram) toward the intersection of 28 and 23L. Realizing I was focusing on runway 23R, I stopped the aircraft after the nose of the aircraft had crossed the hold short line by some 20' or so. My aircraft was safely clear of runway 23L, but had crossed the hold short line. Another aircraft was on 3/4 mi final, and continued the approach and landing without comment, nor was evasive action required. At no time was my aircraft penetrating the approach path of the landing aircraft. I feel the txwys and runway/taxiway intersections on this part of the cle airport (the northeast end) are poorly marked, poorly defined, and extremely confusing both on the airport diagram and on the airport surface. Contributing to this incident was my inexperience parking and taxiing from this north concourse. All previous operations had been from the southwest tip of the west concourse, which always allowed ample taxi time to get established on taxiway lima, parallel to 23L, prior to reaching the intersection of runway 28. Also contributing was our short turnaround time from the previous flight, being behind schedule, and the amount of time reading company NOTAMS on the departure and arrival airports. Too many NOTAMS are printed with our WX, since many of the NOTAMS are either repeated, or outdated. Too much of my time was spent reading (and screening out pertinent) NOTAMS, and not enough time was spent studying the airport diagram.

Title: FLT CREW OF MLG CLEARED TO RWY 23L AT CLE ATTEMPTED TO TAXI TO RWY 23R ON WRONG TXWY. OVERSHOT HOLD LINE BUT STOPPED SHORT OF 23L AS ANOTHER ACFT LANDED.

Narrative: AFTER CALLING FOR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FROM NORTH TERMINAL, OUT ON END OF 'FINGER', WAS TOLD TO 'TAXI TO 23L VIA LIMA, CROSS 28.' AFTER PUSHBACK, ACFT WAS HDG APPROX 150 DEG I BEGAN TO TAXI BY TURNING RIGHT TO APPROX NORTH TO JOIN LIMA TXWY. HAVING JUST READ COMPANY NOTAMS, STATING TKOF PERFORMANCE ON RWY 23L WAS BASED ON FULL LENGTH, NOT THE 23L/28 INTXN. I BEGAN LOOKING TO USE FULL LENGTH, I.E., THE RWY END. I WAS MOMENTARILY CONFUSED, AFTER MAKING ROUGHLY A 210 DEG TURN, AS TO WHICH TXWY WOULD ACTUALLY PLACE ME AT THE END OF 23L. I MISTOOK RWY 23R FOR 23L, AND BEGAN TO STRAIN MY EYES TO SEE WHERE THE THRESHOLD FOR 23R BEGAN, AND WHERE TXWY Z ENDED, STILL INTENT ON USING THE FULL LENGTH OF THE RWY. FOCUSING ON RWY 23R, AND HAVING BEEN TOLD TO CROSS RWY 28, I HEADED OUT THE SHORT TXWY (SEE DIAGRAM) TOWARD THE INTXN OF 28 AND 23L. REALIZING I WAS FOCUSING ON RWY 23R, I STOPPED THE ACFT AFTER THE NOSE OF THE ACFT HAD CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE BY SOME 20' OR SO. MY ACFT WAS SAFELY CLEAR OF RWY 23L, BUT HAD CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. ANOTHER ACFT WAS ON 3/4 MI FINAL, AND CONTINUED THE APCH AND LNDG WITHOUT COMMENT, NOR WAS EVASIVE ACTION REQUIRED. AT NO TIME WAS MY ACFT PENETRATING THE APCH PATH OF THE LNDG ACFT. I FEEL THE TXWYS AND RWY/TXWY INTERSECTIONS ON THIS PART OF THE CLE ARPT (THE NE END) ARE POORLY MARKED, POORLY DEFINED, AND EXTREMELY CONFUSING BOTH ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM AND ON THE ARPT SURFACE. CONTRIBUTING TO THIS INCIDENT WAS MY INEXPERIENCE PARKING AND TAXIING FROM THIS NORTH CONCOURSE. ALL PREVIOUS OPERATIONS HAD BEEN FROM THE SW TIP OF THE WEST CONCOURSE, WHICH ALWAYS ALLOWED AMPLE TAXI TIME TO GET ESTABLISHED ON TXWY LIMA, PARALLEL TO 23L, PRIOR TO REACHING THE INTXN OF RWY 28. ALSO CONTRIBUTING WAS OUR SHORT TURNAROUND TIME FROM THE PREVIOUS FLT, BEING BEHIND SCHEDULE, AND THE AMOUNT OF TIME READING COMPANY NOTAMS ON THE DEP AND ARR ARPTS. TOO MANY NOTAMS ARE PRINTED WITH OUR WX, SINCE MANY OF THE NOTAMS ARE EITHER REPEATED, OR OUTDATED. TOO MUCH OF MY TIME WAS SPENT READING (AND SCREENING OUT PERTINENT) NOTAMS, AND NOT ENOUGH TIME WAS SPENT STUDYING THE ARPT DIAGRAM.
