Narrative:
Deviation from ATC clearance. VFR on top. On this flight I was maintaining VFR on top on an IFR clearance maintaining my own terrain clearance unaware that I was required to maintain minimum IFR altitudes as stipulated in the aim paragraph 266,E3. This was pointed out to me by a friend and I must say I don't think it has always been a requirement to maintain minimum IFR altitudes VFR on top. When did it change?
