Narrative:
In climb passing 10,250' in clouds, light rain, chop, left engine failed and cockpit and aft cabin filled with smoke. First officer and I went on oxygen with smoke goggles. All checklists were complied with, the engine secured. An emergency was declared with ATC advising vectors to return and land at pwm. Equipment (fire) was requested for our landing. F/a's were briefed and the cabin and passenger were prepared for landing. The smoke soon dissipated with smoke removal procedures. An ILS was flown to runway 29 and a normal landing was made. Aircraft remained on the runway until checked by fire/rescue crew and then was towed to gate. Emergency evacuate/evacuation was not required and passenger remained calm and secured until aircraft was at gate and main door opened. All crew members performed in an exemplary manner. Also, ATC provided all necessary assistance. Engine turbine failure was suspected. Engine and cowling remained intact.
