Narrative:
On takeoff the aircraft yawed abruptly to the right; the first officer was flying and was able to control the aircraft with rudder pressure; but it was hard for him to maintain a steady heading; so we declared an emergency and were and asked for immediate return. While on downwind vectors we regained yaw trim and landed normally.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: EMB-145 flight crew experiences runaway rudder trim shortly after takeoff. Initially the full right rudder trim cannot be removed and an emergency is declared for immediate return. On downwind the trim becomes operable and is centered for landing.
