Narrative:
When we were at approximately 6000 MSL lax approach control asked us if we had field in sight for visual to 24R. We said 'yes' (I was looking at what I thought was 24R and which was actually 25R). I had the LOM tuned and 24R ILS tuned. As I turned base I cross-checked the LOM but not the ILS. I was lining up on 25R when the observer (omc, jump seat) pointed out my error. Simultaneously, the tower pointed out my error, I corrected to the right but did not see 24R immediately because of poor visibility. We landed on 24R uneventfully. I failed to check the localizer because I felt I had the runway in sight and because the approach was steep causing me to devote too much attention to the descent. This is the last time I accept a visual approach without having the whole airport in sight. Supplemental information from acn 116537: on downwind to lax 24R, lax approach asked if 'field in sight'. We were abeam the field, high with good visibility downward through haze and called 'field in sight'.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG WRONG RWY APCH. ACCEPTED A VISUAL TO RWY 24R AT LAX BUT OVERSHOT TURN AND STARTED TO LINE UP WITH 25R.
Narrative: WHEN WE WERE AT APPROX 6000 MSL LAX APCH CTL ASKED US IF WE HAD FIELD IN SIGHT FOR VISUAL TO 24R. SIMULTANEOUSLY, THE TWR POINTED OUT MY ERROR, I CORRECTED TO THE RIGHT BUT DID NOT SEE 24R IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE OF POOR VISIBILITY. WE LANDED ON 24R UNEVENTFULLY. I FAILED TO CHECK THE LOC BECAUSE I FELT I HAD THE RWY IN SIGHT AND BECAUSE THE APCH WAS STEEP CAUSING ME TO DEVOTE TOO MUCH ATTN TO THE DSCNT. THIS IS THE LAST TIME I ACCEPT A VISUAL APCH WITHOUT HAVING THE WHOLE ARPT IN SIGHT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM ACN 116537: ON DOWNWIND TO LAX 24R, LAX APCH ASKED IF 'FIELD IN SIGHT'. WE WERE ABEAM THE FIELD, HIGH WITH GOOD VISIBILITY DOWNWARD THROUGH HAZE AND CALLED 'FIELD IN SIGHT'.
