Narrative:
During descent for approach to ft lauderdale, fl (fll), approach control cleared us to 5000'. My first officer was flying the aircraft. I set 5000' in the altitude alert. As we passed through 6000' the controller asked what altitude we were descending to. I informed him of our clearance to 5000' at which time he stated we were cleared only to 6000'. He said when he gave us the clearance he also indicated we had traffic climbing to 5000'. He said he would move the traffic and there was no problem. I cannot be sure of the original clearance without a review of the tapes. However, I feel that when a clearance is given to climb or descend. Only the altitude in the clearance should be stated by the controller. If traffic is to be called out, it should be done with another radio transmission after the clearance readback has been acknowledged.

Title: ACR MLG ALT DEVIATION OVERSHOT DURING DESCENT. APCH CTLR GAVE TRAFFIC ADVISORY WITH ALT AT THE SAME TIME ALT ASSIGNMENT WAS GIVEN AND REPORTER'S CONTINUED TO THE TRAFFIC'S ALT.
Narrative: DURING DSCNT FOR APCH TO FT LAUDERDALE, FL (FLL), APCH CTL CLRED US TO 5000'. MY F/O WAS FLYING THE ACFT. I SET 5000' IN THE ALT ALERT. AS WE PASSED THROUGH 6000' THE CTLR ASKED WHAT ALT WE WERE DESCENDING TO. I INFORMED HIM OF OUR CLRNC TO 5000' AT WHICH TIME HE STATED WE WERE CLRED ONLY TO 6000'. HE SAID WHEN HE GAVE US THE CLRNC HE ALSO INDICATED WE HAD TFC CLIMBING TO 5000'. HE SAID HE WOULD MOVE THE TFC AND THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. I CANNOT BE SURE OF THE ORIGINAL CLRNC WITHOUT A REVIEW OF THE TAPES. HOWEVER, I FEEL THAT WHEN A CLRNC IS GIVEN TO CLIMB OR DSND. ONLY THE ALT IN THE CLRNC SHOULD BE STATED BY THE CTLR. IF TFC IS TO BE CALLED OUT, IT SHOULD BE DONE WITH ANOTHER RADIO XMISSION AFTER THE CLRNC READBACK HAS BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED.
