Narrative:
O'hare eight departure requires 3000' at or above at ord 5 DME and 4000' at or above at ord 8 DME arc. If unable advise departure as soon as possible. Heading was 340 degree. Our takeoff procedure is to reduce climb at 1000' AGL lower nose to approximately climb 800' to 1000' rate of climb and cleanup aircraft, climb at +20 KTS above 0 flap speed to 3000'. If procedure is followed exactly, altitude cannot be met at ord. However modifying climb with a greater climb rate and acceleration to 0 degree flap +20 reduced, altitude requirements can be met. First officer was flying and did not accomplish the above even though he was advised of altitude and distance to 5 DME arc. 4000' at 8 DME was met, after re-advising the departure requirements. I think a more thorough briefing on the above departure requirements, with particular emphasis on modified climb profile is necessary in all departures of this type.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DEP ALT CROSSING RESTRICTION NOT MET.
Narrative: O'HARE EIGHT DEP REQUIRES 3000' AT OR ABOVE AT ORD 5 DME AND 4000' AT OR ABOVE AT ORD 8 DME ARC. IF UNABLE ADVISE DEP ASAP. HDG WAS 340 DEG. OUR TKOF PROC IS TO REDUCE CLIMB AT 1000' AGL LOWER NOSE TO APPROX CLIMB 800' TO 1000' RATE OF CLIMB AND CLEANUP ACFT, CLB AT +20 KTS ABOVE 0 FLAP SPEED TO 3000'. IF PROC IS FOLLOWED EXACTLY, ALT CANNOT BE MET AT ORD. HOWEVER MODIFYING CLIMB WITH A GREATER CLIMB RATE AND ACCELERATION TO 0 DEG FLAP +20 REDUCED, ALT REQUIREMENTS CAN BE MET. F/O WAS FLYING AND DID NOT ACCOMPLISH THE ABOVE EVEN THOUGH HE WAS ADVISED OF ALT AND DISTANCE TO 5 DME ARC. 4000' AT 8 DME WAS MET, AFTER RE-ADVISING THE DEP REQUIREMENTS. I THINK A MORE THOROUGH BRIEFING ON THE ABOVE DEP REQUIREMENTS, WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON MODIFIED CLIMB PROFILE IS NECESSARY IN ALL DEPS OF THIS TYPE.
