Narrative:
On climb out approximately FL220, intermittent #1 engine overheat light on, followed by intermittent red fire handle light and bell. When throttle closed, all warning indications ceased. Initiated return to lax. Later in descent all aforementioned indications returned. Shut down engine #1 and fired left extinguisher bottle. Shutdown checklists accomplished. All warning indications ceased. Still further in descent same warning indications returned. Fired right extinguisher bottle. Indications again ceased. Landing at lax uneventful. Saw brief intermittent warning lights and bell at transfer of power to APU on the ground. Emergency equipment standing by during landing. Fire personnel visually inspected #1 engine on high speed taxiway. Reported no evidence of overheat or fire. Proceeded to gate at lax.

Narrative: ON CLBOUT APPROX FL220, INTERMITTENT #1 ENG OVERHEAT LIGHT ON, FOLLOWED BY INTERMITTENT RED FIRE HANDLE LIGHT AND BELL. WHEN THROTTLE CLOSED, ALL WARNING INDICATIONS CEASED. INITIATED RETURN TO LAX. LATER IN DSCNT ALL AFOREMENTIONED INDICATIONS RETURNED. SHUT DOWN ENG #1 AND FIRED LEFT EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE. SHUTDOWN CHKLISTS ACCOMPLISHED. ALL WARNING INDICATIONS CEASED. STILL FURTHER IN DSCNT SAME WARNING INDICATIONS RETURNED. FIRED RIGHT EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE. INDICATIONS AGAIN CEASED. LNDG AT LAX UNEVENTFUL. SAW BRIEF INTERMITTENT WARNING LIGHTS AND BELL AT TRANSFER OF PWR TO APU ON THE GND. EMER EQUIP STANDING BY DURING LNDG. FIRE PERSONNEL VISUALLY INSPECTED #1 ENG ON HIGH SPD TXWY. RPTED NO EVIDENCE OF OVERHEAT OR FIRE. PROCEEDED TO GATE AT LAX.
