Narrative:
A female primary student went on her first solo x-country to mansfield. She experienced no problems getting to mfd, but forgot to reset her dg before departing med. She flew toward lake erie to the north and then realizing she was headed the wrong direction, headed south. After getting into the heavily populated area around cleveland, she noticed she was getting low on fuel. So, she picked a big, unrestricted field and landed the airplane. She was not injured, nor was the aircraft damaged. I went to lorain with an a & P. He checked the plane over, declared it sound. She and I flew the airplane off a grass strip that she had not seen approximately 100 yds from her T/D point. We refueled at lorain; talked to cle FSDO, lorain county sheriff's department and oh highway patrol. We flew off lorain in evening. We flew at 700' AGL in order to avoid any controled airspace at cle TCA since we had no transponder with mode C. Trip home was uneventful. Female student followed the chkpoints and relaxed.
