Narrative:
On departure from kcvg for kmci and contacting ZID, air carrier xx was initially cleared to 12,000'. We were then cleared to 13,000'. The next clearance from center was to FL280. Passing 14,300' ZID stated air carrier xx was only cleared to 13,000'. We stated our clearance was to FL280 and asked if we should maintain 13,000'. The controller then cleared our flight to FL230 and asked us to call ZID quality assurance, upon arrival. I contacted him and he stated upon review of the tape, we acknowledged a clearance for air carrier xy to FL280. Neither the controller nor the crew on air carrier xy questioned our readback. He also stated that there was conflicting traffic, at 14,000' and we passed within 2 mi of him with 500' of separation. According to mr xa, no certification would be taken against the flight crew of air carrier xx since the controller failed to identify the readback error. Upon further discussion with the first officer, neither of us were confused about the identify or substance of the clearance to FL280. We both were surprised to find we had answered a clearance for another aircraft.

Title: REPORTER FLT ACKNOWLEDGED CLIMB CLRNC AND BEGAN CLIMB. ATC ADVISED CLRNC INTENDED FOR ANOTHER ACFT BUT READBACK NOT ACKNOWLEDGED.
Narrative: ON DEP FROM KCVG FOR KMCI AND CONTACTING ZID, ACR XX WAS INITIALLY CLRED TO 12,000'. WE WERE THEN CLRED TO 13,000'. THE NEXT CLRNC FROM CENTER WAS TO FL280. PASSING 14,300' ZID STATED ACR XX WAS ONLY CLRED TO 13,000'. WE STATED OUR CLRNC WAS TO FL280 AND ASKED IF WE SHOULD MAINTAIN 13,000'. THE CTLR THEN CLRED OUR FLT TO FL230 AND ASKED US TO CALL ZID QUALITY ASSURANCE, UPON ARRIVAL. I CONTACTED HIM AND HE STATED UPON REVIEW OF THE TAPE, WE ACKNOWLEDGED A CLRNC FOR ACR XY TO FL280. NEITHER THE CTLR NOR THE CREW ON ACR XY QUESTIONED OUR READBACK. HE ALSO STATED THAT THERE WAS CONFLICTING TFC, AT 14,000' AND WE PASSED WITHIN 2 MI OF HIM WITH 500' OF SEPARATION. ACCORDING TO MR XA, NO CERTIFICATION WOULD BE TAKEN AGAINST THE FLT CREW OF ACR XX SINCE THE CTLR FAILED TO IDENTIFY THE READBACK ERROR. UPON FURTHER DISCUSSION WITH THE F/O, NEITHER OF US WERE CONFUSED ABOUT THE IDENTIFY OR SUBSTANCE OF THE CLRNC TO FL280. WE BOTH WERE SURPRISED TO FIND WE HAD ANSWERED A CLRNC FOR ANOTHER ACFT.
