Narrative:
Taxiing out of gate got taxi clearance for 24L via taxiway C. By taxiway C8 a vehicle (tug with four carts) crossed in front of us at less than 20 yards from left to right. Used heavy braking to avoid him. Notified ground control with description. ATC then sent airport ops vehicle after the tug. Continued taxiing to 24L with no further incident.
