Narrative:
On takeoff roll after tower instruction to 'expedite departure' - 'landing aircraft', I inadvertently started takeoff roll heading 180 degree rather than 360 degree, final tower transmission did not give post-departure heading. I saw arriving aircraft over threshold at 50' AGL and I was able to deviate to side of runway before tower instructed to do so. My takeoff roll commenced at intersection so horizontal distance estimated at 1500' from single engine light arriving aircraft. I think my mistake arose from 4 factors: 1) arrival 15 min before on runway 06 conducted in obvious 5-10 KT x-wind from 130-140 degree. B) during taxi clearance ground control had instructed me to proceed across runway 06 but I observed arriving aircraft over threshold 06 which combined ground-tower controller instructed to abort (this shook up me!). C) voices on combined ground-tower frequencys changed frequently during the taxi and departure (controller training?). D) most important factor was this pilot's inattention/distraction aggravated by immediately preceding events and tower failure to give post-takeoff heading (as I remember) in his haste to get me to depart from runway intersection. Give heading to pilot at intersection takeoff clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA STARTED TKOF IN THE WRONG DIRECTION FROM RWY INTXN. TKOF ABORTED AND CLEARED RWY FOR SMA ON SHORT FINAL.
Narrative: ON TKOF ROLL AFTER TWR INSTRUCTION TO 'EXPEDITE DEP' - 'LNDG ACFT', I INADVERTENTLY STARTED TKOF ROLL HDG 180 DEG RATHER THAN 360 DEG, FINAL TWR XMISSION DID NOT GIVE POST-DEP HDG. I SAW ARRIVING ACFT OVER THRESHOLD AT 50' AGL AND I WAS ABLE TO DEVIATE TO SIDE OF RWY BEFORE TWR INSTRUCTED TO DO SO. MY TKOF ROLL COMMENCED AT INTXN SO HORIZ DISTANCE ESTIMATED AT 1500' FROM SINGLE ENGINE LIGHT ARRIVING ACFT. I THINK MY MISTAKE AROSE FROM 4 FACTORS: 1) ARR 15 MIN BEFORE ON RWY 06 CONDUCTED IN OBVIOUS 5-10 KT X-WIND FROM 130-140 DEG. B) DURING TAXI CLRNC GND CTL HAD INSTRUCTED ME TO PROCEED ACROSS RWY 06 BUT I OBSERVED ARRIVING ACFT OVER THRESHOLD 06 WHICH COMBINED GND-TWR CTLR INSTRUCTED TO ABORT (THIS SHOOK UP ME!). C) VOICES ON COMBINED GND-TWR FREQS CHANGED FREQUENTLY DURING THE TAXI AND DEP (CTLR TRAINING?). D) MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR WAS THIS PLT'S INATTENTION/DISTR AGGRAVATED BY IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING EVENTS AND TWR FAILURE TO GIVE POST-TKOF HDG (AS I REMEMBER) IN HIS HASTE TO GET ME TO DEPART FROM RWY INTXN. GIVE HDG TO PLT AT INTXN TKOF CLRNC.
