Narrative:

On descent into ord we were given a 285 degree heading and asked to maintain 250 KTS. We maintained the speed and heading till about 10 NM from ord. We were cleared to 2500' and speed at pilot's discretion, and told we were #1 to 4R and to call when the field was in sight. We immediately started slowing (speed brakes and flaps) and descending, and answered 'roger.' we didn't see the runway until the runway was off our right wing and inside the OM (we were still on the assigned 285 degree heading). By the time we saw the runway we were slowing through 170 KTS. We configured for landing (gear out), but at once noticed a landing was impossible from that position and we called and executed a missed approach. I suspect that the controllers misunderstood our 'roger' to their request to report the airport for the visibility as an acceptance of the visibility approach. We were asked to maintain much too high an airspeed, and kept too close to the airport, for a proper set-up for a safe approach for landing.

Title: ACR ACFT MAKES GO AROUND FROM VISUAL APCH AS IT APPEARS IMPRACTICAL TO CONTINUE APCH.

Narrative: ON DSCNT INTO ORD WE WERE GIVEN A 285 DEG HDG AND ASKED TO MAINTAIN 250 KTS. WE MAINTAINED THE SPD AND HDG TILL ABOUT 10 NM FROM ORD. WE WERE CLRED TO 2500' AND SPD AT PLT'S DISCRETION, AND TOLD WE WERE #1 TO 4R AND TO CALL WHEN THE FIELD WAS IN SIGHT. WE IMMEDIATELY STARTED SLOWING (SPD BRAKES AND FLAPS) AND DSNDING, AND ANSWERED 'ROGER.' WE DIDN'T SEE THE RWY UNTIL THE RWY WAS OFF OUR RIGHT WING AND INSIDE THE OM (WE WERE STILL ON THE ASSIGNED 285 DEG HDG). BY THE TIME WE SAW THE RWY WE WERE SLOWING THROUGH 170 KTS. WE CONFIGURED FOR LNDG (GEAR OUT), BUT AT ONCE NOTICED A LNDG WAS IMPOSSIBLE FROM THAT POS AND WE CALLED AND EXECUTED A MISSED APCH. I SUSPECT THAT THE CTLRS MISUNDERSTOOD OUR 'ROGER' TO THEIR REQUEST TO RPT THE ARPT FOR THE VIS AS AN ACCEPTANCE OF THE VIS APCH. WE WERE ASKED TO MAINTAIN MUCH TOO HIGH AN AIRSPD, AND KEPT TOO CLOSE TO THE ARPT, FOR A PROPER SET-UP FOR A SAFE APCH FOR LNDG.
