Narrative:
Aircraft start-up, engine primed for start. All steps followed per check sheet. Propeller rotated 1 turn and stopped at 12 O'clock position. Starter would not engage propeller gear. After up to 10 tries, retarded throttle, shut off switch, decided to move propeller from 12 to 10 O'clock position to see if starter would engaged. Deplaned, moved to front of propeller and moved propeller 30 degrees or so. Events moved too fast to clearly state all facts, but engine fired and continued to run, moving toward me due to grade on tarmac. Somehow got around propeller to left wing strut to try to stop aircraft forward progress. Aircraft moved forward 30-40' and propeller struck a 'T'-hangar, stopping engine. Later found key can be removed from switch at any position. Removing key would not ensure switch was in off position. When finally able to get to cabin, pulled key straight out of switch by end of key ring. It was why I thought key was in the off position.
