Narrative:
Moved aircraft out of hangar onto hangar taxiway. Master switch on, primed engine and electric boost pump. Cleared to start with throttle approximately 1 inch. Aircraft was stationed at a 45 degree angle on hangar taxiway when ignition was turned on. Engine started on second rotation and developed fairly high RPM on start. Black ice on hangar taxiway allowed aircraft to begin rolling forward very quickly with brakes applied. I reapplied brakes and before I could correct forward movement by throttling down, aircraft slid off hangar taxiway down a slight incline in snow and went about 60 ft and struck tree with propeller and left wing, all in a matter of a few seconds. Turned off ignition, master and gas and quickly exited aircraft with no apparent injury. Human factors: not seeing ice on hangar taxiway, not realizing and reacting to sliding with brakes on, and so quickly, unable to cut power before losing traction on ice and snow.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACFT ENG STARTED ON ICY RAMP, HIGH RPM, ACFT SLID, WITH BRAKES ON, DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND HIT TREE. ACFT DAMAGE TO PROP AND WING.
Narrative: MOVED ACFT OUT OF HANGAR ONTO HANGAR TXWY. MASTER SWITCH ON, PRIMED ENG AND ELECTRIC BOOST PUMP. CLRED TO START WITH THROTTLE APPROX 1 INCH. ACFT WAS STATIONED AT A 45 DEG ANGLE ON HANGAR TXWY WHEN IGNITION WAS TURNED ON. ENG STARTED ON SECOND ROTATION AND DEVELOPED FAIRLY HIGH RPM ON START. BLACK ICE ON HANGAR TXWY ALLOWED ACFT TO BEGIN ROLLING FORWARD VERY QUICKLY WITH BRAKES APPLIED. I REAPPLIED BRAKES AND BEFORE I COULD CORRECT FORWARD MOVEMENT BY THROTTLING DOWN, ACFT SLID OFF HANGAR TXWY DOWN A SLIGHT INCLINE IN SNOW AND WENT ABOUT 60 FT AND STRUCK TREE WITH PROP AND L WING, ALL IN A MATTER OF A FEW SECONDS. TURNED OFF IGNITION, MASTER AND GAS AND QUICKLY EXITED ACFT WITH NO APPARENT INJURY. HUMAN FACTORS: NOT SEEING ICE ON HANGAR TXWY, NOT REALIZING AND REACTING TO SLIDING WITH BRAKES ON, AND SO QUICKLY, UNABLE TO CUT PWR BEFORE LOSING TRACTION ON ICE AND SNOW.
