Narrative:
Approach to runway 24L at lax instead of the charted 24R. Traffic (an light transport) to be on our right for runway 24R, and another airplane (small light twin) from the east for the runway 25 on our left. On base, gear and flaps were extended. I completed the final descent checklist on base leg and start of turn to final. I looked up and saw the aircraft for the 25's at 11 O'clock and thought, 'he is coming over to the 24's.' I then looked at the airport and realized we were headed toward the 25's and called out to my first officer, 'the 2-4's.' we then landed on 24L as cleared. We were never in conflict with any other aircraft. I believe the clearance to 24L caused the fixation to the left runways (25's), and the airplane on approach to the 25's caused just enough distraction to cause us to lose sight of our runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG TRACK DEVIATION FLYING A STADIUM VISUAL INTO LAX.
Narrative: APCH TO RWY 24L AT LAX INSTEAD OF THE CHARTED 24R. TFC (AN LTT) TO BE ON OUR RIGHT FOR RWY 24R, AND ANOTHER AIRPLANE (SMALL LIGHT TWIN) FROM THE E FOR THE RWY 25 ON OUR LEFT. ON BASE, GEAR AND FLAPS WERE EXTENDED. I COMPLETED THE FINAL DSCNT CHKLIST ON BASE LEG AND START OF TURN TO FINAL. I LOOKED UP AND SAW THE ACFT FOR THE 25'S AT 11 O'CLOCK AND THOUGHT, 'HE IS COMING OVER TO THE 24'S.' I THEN LOOKED AT THE ARPT AND REALIZED WE WERE HEADED TOWARD THE 25'S AND CALLED OUT TO MY F/O, 'THE 2-4'S.' WE THEN LANDED ON 24L AS CLRED. WE WERE NEVER IN CONFLICT WITH ANY OTHER ACFT. I BELIEVE THE CLRNC TO 24L CAUSED THE FIXATION TO THE LEFT RWYS (25'S), AND THE AIRPLANE ON APCH TO THE 25'S CAUSED JUST ENOUGH DISTR TO CAUSE US TO LOSE SIGHT OF OUR RWY.
