Narrative:
Cleared to descend via SERFR1 STAR; 'west transition.' queried ATC as to whether they meant the 'wesla' transition and they responded affirmatively. Frequency change and next controller asked where we were going. We responded we were descending via the wesla transition. ATC cleared us direct menlo for 28L. They had wanted us to descend for landing west; not wesla transition.
